Worshipping Holika

Holika Dahan is done during the month of Falguna as per the hindu calendar on Shukla purnima. Before holika dahan there is a tradition to worship holika. Holika is the things which are spread out around the circular ring and these can be small and big rings of cow dung cake, straws and dried grass.

Things which hold a lot of importance in the worship of holika are Roli etc. and cow dung cake garland. After the worship of holika one, five or seven garland of small cow dung cake is offered to holi. Generally, Holika which is made for lighting it publicly is worshipped. This is generally put up at a public place.

Traditionally, the holi stick was planted one month before the day of the holi and thereafter starting from the fifth day of Holastak or shuklapaksh things for burning is gathered. These days in the towns and cities they put up the holi stick either a day before the Holastak, or on the same day or before the start of holastak to establish the symbol of holi.

Method of worshipping Holika

The method is listed below:

1. List of things needed for worship – Roli, Thread, Raw Rice, Flowers, Turmeric whole, whole moong, Bataasey, shrifal, Garland made of small cow dung cake etc.

2. The Ritual – Put all the things listed above in a plate and take water in a small round metal pot. On reaching the spot. Please use the mantra below and sprinkle some water on yourself and the things which have got for worship:

Om Pundrikakshah Punatu,
Om Pundrikakshah Punatu,
Om Pundrikakshah Punatu!

Now take water, the raw rice and flower in your hand along with some coins and recite the mantra below:

Om Vishnuh Vishnuh Vishnuh
Shrimadbhagvato Mhapurushsye
Vishyoragya Adh dives prabhav
Naam samvatsare samvat 2070 falgun
Mase shubhe shuklpakshe purnimayam

Shubh titho rvivasre…… Gotr (take the name of your Gotr)
Uttpanna… … (Chant your name) (Sharma/Verma/Guptahm) mam

Ih janmni janmantre va sarvpaapakshypurvak
Dirgayuvipul dhandhanyam shatruprajye
Mamm dehik devik bhotik trividh
Taap nirvarthyam sadbhishtsidhyarthye
Parhadnrsinghholi ityadinam pujanmham karishyami!

Ganesh Ambika Worship:

Focus on the form of Lord Ganesh taking some raw rice and flower in your hand.

Gjananam bhutgnadisevitam Kapithjumbufalcharubhakshnam!
Umasutam shokvinashkarkam Nmami vigneshvarpadpajam!!
Om Gam Ganpatye Namah Panchopchararthe Gandhakshatpushpani Smarpyami!!

(Now Offer a flower by applying roli and rice on it to Lord Ganesha)

Om Ambikaye Namah Panchopchararthe Gandhakshatpushpani Smarpyami!!

(Now focus on goddess Ambika and offer things like, scent, rice and flower).

Om Holikaye Namah Panchopchararthe Gandhakshatpushpani Smarpyami!!

(Offer things like, scent, rice and flower).

Om Pahrladaye Namah Panchopchararthe Gandhakshatpushpani Smarpyami!!

(Remember Prahlad with folded hands and offer things like, scent, rice and flower).

Om Narsinghaye Namah Panchopchararthe Gandhakshatpushpani Smarpyami!!

(Remember God Narsingh and offer things like, scent, rice and flower).

Now stand in front of the holika with folded hands and mentally get prepared with all your wishes and recite the mantra below:

Asmabhibharysantrsteh Krta tuam Holike Yatah! Atastvam Pujyishyami Bhute Bhutiprda Bhavh!!

After doing this offer thing like scent, rice, flower, whole moong, whole turmeric, and the cow dung garland to prahlad. Tie the thread around the holika and then with folded hands go around the holika thrice. And after that leave the metal pot containing water there.
