This article explain all about Pitru Paksh and Shardh 2025. It will cover Shraddha puja / Pitr Paksh vidhi, Tithi and precodure, When to do shraddha after death?, Can daughter do shraddha / Pitr Paksh?, Pitr Paksh / Shardh ceremony food etc.

Pitru Paksha 2025 will begin on 07 September 2025 and ends on 21 September 2025.

Annual death ceremony tithi and procedure

After the completion of Ganesha utsav the forthcoming 14 days are meant to do the shraddha and worship of ancestors. During this time as a Hindu you have to worship your Pitris who are the ancestors of your family. This time is also known as Pitru Paksha and during it your ancestors come on the earth so that they might expect the puja and food offerings done by you for them. When your ancestors have died then after this incident you have to do shraddha worship or puja in their honor and respect. This puja is generally being done during the days of pitru paksha in the month of September.

Shardh 2025 – Shraddha puja vidhi

When you do the worship of your ancestors and pitris then you have to get up early in morning. Just take bath and clean the place of worshiping Gods and your ancestors with the help of holy water or Gangajal. You can make use of cow’s urine for this task. During the days of Shraddha the women of your family should get purified with bath and make food for the ancestors of your family. Invite the Brahmans to your home and welcome them with the help of washing their feet with water. You can worship your pitris with ardent devotion and respect towards them.

Shraddha ritual mantras

When you do the shraddha worship in respect of your ancestors then you have to also chant some basic mantras in this process. Take for examples when you start the shraddha worship, then you have to chant Pitrabhuosh Mahayogibhune Ayo Cham Namah: Swhaaye Swa Dhaye Nityamev bhvanyua ta. You have to chant this mentioned mantra even at the end of doing shraddha puja. While chanting these mantras you should face the East direction. You should also wear clean and well washed clothes. The color of these clothes should be generally white as this color denotes purity and peace. You can also do shraddha rituals with vessels of brass and copper metals.

When to do shraddha after death?

You can do the shraddha worship between the 1st and 14th forthnights of Pitru Paksha. This worship can be done on any of these forthnights whenever possible. It has been seen that when any family member gets deceased then their male relatives get their head clean shaved. Then they invite other relatives and friends on the 10th or 12th fortnight to serve a family dinner to them. During these days you can also distribute food, clothes and other items to the poor and needy people. This can be done in the memory of your dead ancestors. Even then just remember that shraddha worship should be done during early morning hours.

Can daughter do shraddha?

Some of you might ask can daughters do shraddha worship? Well this is very interesting question. In sacred texts of Hindus it has been mentioned that there is no discrimination on gender basis when it comes to doing shraddha worship and making pinda daan. In this task even females can take part actively. Even then when any family member dies then daughters should not do the funeral rites of the deceased person. In Hindus it has been believed that if females burn the pyre of a dead person then the deceased person will not get salvation that is also known as Moksha.

Shardh 2025 – Shraddha ceremony food

Now when you do the ceremony of shraddha worship then you have to take care of the food issue. Here you have to invite well learned and knowledgeable Brahmins who will do a fire ritual known as homa. In this ritual you have to offer balls of rice in the memory of the deceased ancestors. During the months of Shraddha never eat non vegetarian food. You should not eat meat and you should also refrain from bad habits like drinking alcohol and smoking. You can eat pure vegetarian food like Bajre ki Khichdi, beans vegetable and rice mixed with coriander leaves.

How to do tarpan at home on occasion of Pitru Paksh?

When you do the task of worshiping your deceased ancestors then you have to also do tarpan. This is a very important ritual. This task is done with the following steps:-

1. Just take a stool and place it in the South direction.
2. Place a pure and well washed white cloth over it.
3. Spread barley and sesam seeds over this stool.
4. You have to also keep the photo of your deceased ancestor along with khusa grass.

5. Call and invoke your ancestors with folded hands.
6. Then you can do the tarpan of your ancestors with the help of pure water that will be filled in a copper vessel.
You can do the task of offering tarpan during early morning hours after taking bath and wearing pure white colored clothes.

Shraddha puja

You can do and conduct shraddha puja in the memory of your deceased ancestors. When you worship your ancestors in the Hindu month of Ashwin then they will become pleased and bless you with peace and prosperity. In this way your beloved ancestors will also get salvation from this world. You can do the shraddha puja during the pitru paksha that comes in the month of September. Here you have to worship your ancestors and offer food to them. This will bring peace, happiness and prosperity at your home.

Annual death ceremony tithi procedure on Pitru Paksh

The procedure of annual death ceremony tithi procedure is very easy. Get up early in the morning. Take bath and arrange all the needed articles to worship your ancestors. Invite Brahmans and do the shraddha puja. Offer food, money and other things to Brahmans. Make food and call your friends and relatives. Then you can have a group lunch or dinner along with them in honor of your deceased ancestors.

The final conclusion about Pitru Paksh

Shraddha puja is a very important custom especially among Hindus. When you do this puja along with your family annually then your pitrus and ancestors will become pleased and will bless you with peace, happiness and prosperity.

Main Donations

1. Donate Cow (Gow Daan): The first and prime article amongst the ten ‘Mahadaan’ in Pitru Paksha is the cow.

2. Donate Land (Bhumi Daan): If the ‘Shradhkarta’ can afford to offer land, he should donate a small portion to a poor person. If that’s not feasible, a small piece of clay can be taken, kept in a thali, with Sankalp, and given to a Brahmin along with ‘Dakshina’.

3. Donate Sesame (Til Daan): Black sesame seeds are considered auspicious for donation.

4. Donate Gold (Swarn Daan): If one does not have gold to donate, Dakshina should be given to a Brahmin.

5. Donate Ghee (Ghrit Daan): Ghee made of cow’s milk should be donated in a pot.

6. Donate Clothes (Vastra Daan): Two main attires and two undergarments, which should be new or in good condition, should be donated to a Brahmin.

7. Donate Cereals (Dhaany Daan): Wheat, rice, and other cereals should be offered after taking Sankalp.

8. Donate Jaggery (Gud Daan): Jaggery donation during Pitru Paksha is also favorable.

9. Donate Silver (Rajat Daan): Ancestors bless their successors when they offer silver during Pitru Paksha.

10. Donate Salt (Lavan Daan): Donating salt in Pitru Paksha pleases the ancestors.

Shradhkarma: Understanding the Human Body and the Five Koshas

Shradhkarma : The Cycle of Life or Death relates to the belief that the human body is created from five Koshas: 1. Annamaya Kosha (body), 2. Pranamaya Kosha (life force), 3. Manomaya Kosha (mind), 4. Vijnanamaya Kosha (wisdom and knowledge), 5. Anandamaya Kosha (bliss). These five Koshas are interconnected, helping us transcend the cycle of life and death to attain liberation and merge with the Supreme.

After death, four Koshas remain in this world. These Koshas gradually leave the body, a process called Bhootgati. Eventually, when the body is cremated, the soul departs, and all the Koshas enter the Pretyoni. The Manomaya Kosha is particularly important in this yoni. The body ceases to exist at the time of death, but the soul experiences pleasure and pain due to the desires of this yoni.

Once these desires are fulfilled, this Kosha is also liberated. The remaining three Koshas move to Devgati, while Anandamaya Kosha is left alone, entering a state known as Ishtgati. Ishtgati represents the manifestation and completion of the physical universe. In this state, the being no longer feels pleasure or pain and reaches Surya Lok (the Sun World).

From Surya Lok, the soul returns to earth via the rays of the sun and re-enters the womb, taking birth as a human in the tenth month. Those who attain liberation after death also free their fire Koshas and do not suffer in any of these Gatis.

This natural cycle indicates that a human being faces two outcomes after death: Liberation or entrapment in the cycle of life and death. In the first case, the soul is freed from all suffering and desires, while in the second, it must undergo four Doshas and Yonis.

Bhoot Yoni ends when the body is cremated, meaning that there is little reason to perform Shradhkarma or Yagya for the deceased. However, Pind Daan can still be offered. The length of stay in Pretyoni depends on the desires of the deceased.

The soul cannot perform Karma or any spiritual actions; it neither experiences physical pain nor pleasure due to its Karma.

Happiness and sorrow are states of the mind. Both virtuous and sinful individuals attain liberation from their subtle bodies after experiencing the results of their Karmas (whether good or bad) and satisfying their desires. It is believed that by performing Shradhkarma during Shradh Paksha, the souls of deceased ancestors find peace, and they are liberated from their sins and bad deeds.

This is why those still living perform Shradhkarma for their deceased ancestors during Pitru Paksha, a fortnight dedicated to honoring ancestors through food offerings and rituals.

Some Pandits believe that Shradhkarma should be performed exclusively for ancestors who reside in Pitralok (the realm of ancestors). During the invocation, these ancestors are believed to arrive and accept the offerings made to them.

However, it is believed that ancestors who passed away with unfulfilled desires require assistance from their descendants to find relief from their suffering. Due to their non-existence in the physical world, they cannot free themselves, and their successors must perform rituals to help them.

Ancient scriptures provide examples of deceased ancestors appearing from Pitralok during Shradhkarma. There are also instances of great individuals accepting the worship offered by their descendants. Although the Vedas do not explicitly mention normal souls receiving homage, the tradition of Shradhkarma is more beneficial to the descendants than the ancestors, as it fulfills their religious duty to repay the debt owed to their forebears and helps liberate them from their sins.

Therefore, Shradhkarma should be performed with love and in accordance with the teachings of the Shastras.

Period of Shradh (07th September 2025 – 21st September 2025)

Based on the shastra’s saying, “Shradya pitran udishya vidhina kriyate yatkarm tat shradham,” which means, “whatever acts or rituals you perform with devotion for your deceased loved ones is known as Shradh.” The donations made during Shradh should be done with devotion, as devotion is the essence of Shradh rituals. Without it, offerings and prayers become mere formalities.

According to the great priest Parashar, “Shradh is the process of offering prayers using specific materials like Black Sesame (Kala Teel), Kush (long dry grass), and mantras at an appropriate time and place with the use of specific utensils (patra).”

Shradh for your ancestors should be performed on their death anniversary or during the months of Pitru Paksha, which falls in the Hindu month of Ashwin (September), right before Navratri. If you perform Shradh on the exact day of your ancestor’s death, it is known as Ekodisht Shradh.

Ekodisht Shradh is the ritual performed for the salvation of a particular individual’s soul on their death anniversary. The ritual involves offering Pind (a round ball made from wheat, rice flour, sesame seeds, milk, and honey) on the specified day and feeding a Brahman (Hindu priest). Another type of Shradh is Pawarn Shradh, performed during the Krishna Paksha phase in Ashwin month, corresponding to the exact date of the ancestor’s passing.

As per the rituals, food is offered to nine Brahmans, but offering it to even one Brahman with utmost devotion fulfills the ritual obligations.

Shradh Ritual Process for Ancestors:

1. Wear plain white clothing and remember your ancestors.

2. Sit facing east.

3. Begin the prayer by holding Trikush, Black Sesame, and water in your hand while chanting the following mantra:

Sankalp Mantra

“Om Vishnu Vishnu Vishnu namah partmatmane purshotamaye om tatsat adhaytasya vishnorogya jagatsrishti karmani prabartmanasye brahmanohin dwitiye paradhre sri swetwarah kalpe vaivast manwantare ashtawishanti tame kaliyuge kali pratham charne jambudeepey bharatkhande bharat varshey aryavartrantgartayk deshey (name the state and city) jilantgartey (name the town or village) Namin chetrey (closest Hindu pilgrimage place) Namin tirthsthal samipey bodhawatare vikram samwat2066, subhkrit naam samwatsarey surya dakshinayaney, sharad ritu aswin masey Krishnapakshey (state the date) thitho (mention the day) washrey singh/kanya rashi sthith suryey makar rashi sthithey devgurow sheshesu grihashu yatha-yatha rashi sthan sthiteysu satsu aaewam grahgungan visheshan vishishtayaan subh pun thitho (state your Gotra) gotrotpanosah (state your full name) ah ashmat pitrepitamah pratitamhanam sapatnikanam tataambatritaymityadi shastrabidhitwashisht sambandhi bandhwanam yey chasmatoh abhiwankchantih tesha cha chutpipasha nibriti purwakam chaytripti sampadnarth Brahman bhojnatmakam sankalpik shradham tatha panchbali karmam cha karishyeh.”

After the prayer, the water you hold should be poured onto the ground.

Before offering food to the Brahman, ask the Pandit to perform Panchbali, which consists of Gobali (for cows), Shwanbali (for dogs), Kakbali (for crows), Devadibali (for deities), and Pipilika Bali (for ants).

Prepare five types of food in five separate utensils or leaves, and then proceed to perform the rituals for each bali by lifting the respective utensil or leaf.

1. Gobali (For Cows)

Use the following mantra while offering Gobali:

Showrmeyaah sarwahita pavitra punyarashyah,
Pratigriantu may grasham gawshtreylokaymatrah,
Edey gobhayao na mamah.

2. Shwanbali (For Dogs)

Perform this bali by chanting the following mantra:

Dwoh shrawanoh shyamshbalow baiwastawkulodawbhawoh,
Tabhyamanam prayakchami shayatametawhinsakow,
Edey sharbhyam na mamah.

3. Kakbali (For Crows)

Offer this bali by reciting:

Aeyndrawarun baybyaham yamyah baey neytrastastatha,
Bayesah pratigrihantoh bhumoh pindah,

4. Devbali (For Deities)

Use the following mantra while offering Devbali:

Deva manushyaha pashwoh byamshi shidha shaychorgadaytashangha,
Pretah pishachastwa samasta yeh chananbhichchanti maya pradtam,
Idmanah devadibhayo na mamah

5. Pipilika Bali (For Ants)

Use this mantra while offering Pipilika Bali:

Pipilikah kitpataskandha bubhuchitah karmnibandhbadha,
Tesha he triptayarthmindham mayananm tebhayo weshrishtham sikinoh bhawantu,
Idmanah Pipilikahdebhayo na mamah
Once Panchbali is completed, the food can either be offered to the fire or given to animals like cows, dogs, crows, or ants.

Next, offer food to the Brahman. The meal should include grains, ghee, sugar, and salt.

After serving the Brahman, offer Tambul (betel leaves and nuts) and other materials. Consider the Brahman as a representation of your ancestor, and circle him four times as part of the ritual. Once all these rituals are complete, you may consume your meal.

The success of Shradh depends on the devotion with which it is performed. According to the shastras, if someone cannot afford to perform full Shradh rituals, feeding a cow in the name of the ancestor is also equivalent to performing Shradh. If even this is not possible, simply raise your hands and inform the ancestor gods that you lack material means but offer your devotion as an offering.

On the day of Shradha 2025, the person performing ‘shradhakarma’ and the Brahmin conducting the ritual must observe celibacy to maintain the sanctity of the ceremony.
2. Avoid using black & red color flowers, strongly scented or odorless flowers like Kadamb, Kevada, Bilvapatra, Karvir, Maulsire. These flowers are not appropriate for the ritual.

3. Refrain from using iron vessels for Shradha rituals. Instead, use silver vessels as they are considered favorable to ancestors.

4. The performer of Shradha should abstain from consuming betel leaves, taking oil massages, fasting, brushing teeth (Datoon), and taking medications on the day of Shradha.

5. Never use substances like Kasturi (Musk Deer), Gorochan, or Rakt Chandan during Shradha ceremonies.

6. Consuming food from outside sources is prohibited for the individual performing Shradha, especially on the day of the ritual.

7. Heavy physical labor, long-distance travel, and frequent meals should be avoided by the person conducting Shradha.

8. Abstain from telling lies, using foul language, theft, or infidelity on Shradha day. These actions anger the ancestors, leading to obstacles in progress and hardships.

9. Do not cook Brinjal (eggplant) on the day of Shradha. It is forbidden.

10. If a dog sees the food prepared for Shradha, the food should be discarded and not consumed.

12. Donating black sesame seeds is considered highly auspicious while performing the rituals.

13. Ancestors are pleased with pure vegetarian food, fruits, and cereals. Offer hygienic and wholesome food with devotion to gain blessings for happiness, progress, and resolving family conflicts.

14. Use Kusha grass obtained from sacred religious places during the performance of Shradha.

15. Avoid performing the Karma before sunrise, during Shukla Paksha, at night, or on the performer’s birthday if possible.

16. Set aside five portions of cooked food for a dog, sinner, leper, sick, and crow, placing them on five separate leaves, and perform the ‘Panchbali’ ritual.

17. Shradha rituals should not be performed at night, dusk, dawn, or during evening hours.

18. Those whose ancestors died in war or by weapons should perform Shradha on ‘Chaturdashi’, the fourteenth day of Pitru Paksha.

Pitru Paksha Shraddha, Mahalaya Shraddha, Pitr Paksha Puja 2025

Pitru (Pitrus) refers to late ancestors from one’s lineage, existing in soul form. Offering tarpans (water offerings with mantras) and shraddhas (in the form of Homam for Pitrs or offerings with specified mantras) can invoke their blessings. When Pitrs are pleased, the deities—Vasus (prosperity), Rudras (shelter and courage), and Aadityas (well-being)—are also pleased. There will be no scarcity of essential resources for those who honor their Pitrs correctly.

Pitru Paksha 2025 / Shradh 2025: Dates from 07 September to 21 September 2025

Pitrus should be honored monthly on Amaavasya day, annually on the tithi of their passing, and especially during Mahalaya Paksha. Honoring Pitrs during Pitru Paksha grants merits beyond human understanding. Pitru Paksha is considered even more significant than the annual Shraadh of parents. Do’s and Don’ts of Pitru Paksha / Shraadh

Pitru Paksha (Mahalaya Paksha) begins on September 07, 2025, and is an important period for honoring ancestors. During this time, Pitrus are believed to visit their descendants’ homes, with divine consent, to bless those who respect them. Prayers Offering for Moksha of your Ancestors

Austerities for Pitru Paksha 2025 (for those with deceased parents):

1) Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food (for non-vegetarians).

2) Avoid onions, garlic, outside food, processed foods, and drumstick vegetables (for vegetarians).

3) Refrain from shaving during the entire fortnight until Mahalaya Amavasya, if possible.

4) Perform shraddha on the tithi of the ancestor’s death or offer “anna dhaanam” (food donation) to the needy or priests. Avoid shaving on this day.

5) Abstain from sexual interactions during the Pitru Paksha fortnight as a sign of respect to the ancestors.

6) Recite Garuda Purana, Nachiketa’s story from the Upanishads, and the Gangaa Avatarana episode from Shrimad Valmiki Ramayana. These texts bring joy to Pitrus and ensure their blessings.

Those who are under the influence of Saturn Sadesati (a period of seven and a half years) or Dhaiya (a period of two and a half years), or are experiencing Saturn Dasha and Antardasha, can benefit from performing sadhana and pooja to appease Lord Shani. These rituals help in mitigating the malefic effects caused by Shani and other life-related doshas.

There are primarily three types of doshas: Malefic planets in the kundali, Pitra Dosha, and life-affecting diseases. These doshas lead to various miseries, turning life into a struggle.

1. Planetary Defects

Planets significantly influence human life. Malefic planets in the kundali (birth chart) can cast negative effects, leading to suffering in specific areas of life. The cruel and malefic planets include the Sun, Mars, Rahu, and Saturn. When these planets are inauspicious, one experiences miseries and stress. In particular, Saturn’s influence can affect one’s family, marital life, and finances. The individual may experience loss of income and lack of happiness, leading to a difficult and challenging life.

Many historical examples demonstrate that those influenced by Saturn during Sadesati or Dhaiya faced setbacks. During these periods, prosperity declines, success becomes elusive, and individuals feel dejected, unable to progress.

2. Pitra Dosha

Pitra Dosha in the kundali indicates that a person must repay the karmic debt of their ancestors. This often occurs when ancestors pass away with unfulfilled desires or untimely deaths. Their unfulfilled wishes linger, and their souls seek satisfaction through their descendants. If no actions are taken to honor them, the result is family conflict, disobedient children, and a lack of harmony among couples. Pitra Dosha leads to constant quarrels, hindering the overall progress of the family. Performing pooja on Shani Jayanti can help remove Pitra Dosha and bring peace.

3. Diseases and Shani

In many cases, family members suffer from chronic diseases or hereditary illnesses. This leads to continuous medical expenses without achieving permanent recovery. The illness may seem to heal but reappears, affecting various family members, including the house owner, housewife, children, or grandchildren. In such situations, performing the Shani Shaman Pooja is recommended. The importance of this ritual is well-documented in ancient scriptures.
