During Diwali, Lord Ganesha is worshiped alongside Goddess Lakshmi instead of Lord Vishnu. Many people wonder why this is so, and why Lord Vishnu is not worshiped with Goddess Lakshmi during this important festival. The answer lies in a fascinating mythological story that explains the connection between Lakshmi and Ganesha.

Lakshmi and Ganesha Worshiped Together – Mythological Story

Once upon a time, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi were having a conversation in heaven. During this conversation, Goddess Lakshmi was praising herself, telling Lord Vishnu that she is the most worship-worthy in the world, and that by her grace, people attain all the pleasures of life and become the happiest.

Upon hearing this self-praise, Lord Vishnu responded in an effort to reduce her ego. He said, “You possess many great qualities, but you have never experienced the joy of motherhood, which is the most important feeling in the universe for any woman.”

This comment deeply disheartened Goddess Lakshmi, and in her sorrow, she went to her dear friend, Goddess Parvati. After listening to Lakshmi’s distress, Parvati asked, “How can I help you?” Lakshmi explained her desire to experience motherhood and requested, “You have two sons. If you could give me one, you would still have one son, and I would finally experience the grace of motherhood.”

Parvati’s Response to Lakshmi

After hearing this, Goddess Parvati responded, “I have two sons, Kartikeya and Ganesha. Kartikeya has six faces and requires constant attention due to his need to eat frequently. Ganesha, on the other hand, is very mischievous, and if I lose sight of him for even a moment, he creates chaos. You, Lakshmi, are always moving from place to place, so how will you care for my sons?”

Goddess Lakshmi replied, “I will keep your sons close to my heart and shower them with love. Whether it is Kartikeya or Ganesha, I will take care of both of them. All the servants in heaven will serve them day and night, so please allow me to adopt one of them.”

Goddess Parvati’s Decision

Knowing her sons well, Goddess Parvati decided to give Lord Ganesha to Goddess Lakshmi as her adopted son. Lakshmi was overjoyed and said, “From this day forward, I will bestow all my accomplishments, luxury, and prosperity upon my son Ganesha. Additionally, Riddhi and Siddhi, the daughters of Lord Brahma, will be married to him as a symbol of my promise.”

Lakshmi further declared, “I will fulfill all of Ganesha’s desires. Whoever in all the three worlds does not worship Lord Ganesha and engages in backbiting will be distanced from me. From now on, wherever my worship is performed, Lord Ganesha’s worship must also take place. If someone fails to worship Shri Ganesha along with me, they cannot receive my blessings or wealth.”

Upon hearing these words, Maa Parvati was extremely pleased and entrusted her son Ganesha to Goddess Lakshmi. This is why during Deepawali Puja or Lakshmi Puja, worship of Lord Ganesha is essential.

Maa Kali Worship

Goddess Kali is worshipped on this day. Narak Chaturdashi is the occasion for doing pooja of Maa Kali. People worship her to get the boon of strength and courage that is needed to overcome the dark and evil forces. Doing Kali pooja on this helps in protecting you from people who indulge in evil acts. Goddess Kali destroys and kills all types of evil, wrongs, and negative forces. You will get victory over your opponents and enemies if you do Kali worship on this day.

Occult and Tantrik Rituals

The 14th tithi or chaturdashi is best for indulging in the occult. People do Tantrik rituals on this day. If you want to remove the evil from your or your loved one’s life, you can do some remedies on Narak Chaturdashi. Contact an astrologer to find problems in your kundli and do the remedies as suggested on this day.

Pacifying Rahu
Narak Chaturdashi is an ideal occasion for pacifying Rahu. Rahu signifies the negative forces and if it is not placed in a good position in the kundli, it can bring destruction and negative effect in your life. Goddess Kali helps in nullifying the harmful effect of a wrongly placed Rahu in kundli. If you are facing a problem in your life due to a negative Rahu, do remedies to make Maa Kali happy. This will cancel the harmful effect of Rahu. Narak Chaturdashi is also known as Kali Chaudas.

Abhyang Snan

Abhyang Snan is the most important ritual on Narak Chaturdashi although it can be done on Amavasya and Pratipada in Diwali. The Hindu mythology and custom say that doing the abhyang snan on the chaturdashi tithi one day before Diwali can help in avoiding the chance of going to Narak. For doing the abhyang snan, you must apply an ubtan on your body that has sesame oil or til ka tel. Remember Varun God while having a bath. Put haldi and kumkum in the water before bathing. If possible wear new clothes. Do yama tarpan after this. Light a diya for yamaraj in the evening on narak chaturdashi.

Muhurat of Narak Chaturdashi Snan

The muhurat or most auspicious time for abhyang snan on Narak Chaturdashi on 31 October.

2. Sing bhajan and songs of Maa Kali on this day. Do this at the time of muhurat especially.
3. Bathe with water and remember to wash hair on Narak Chaturdashi. Use Kajal in the eyes. This will help in removing evil elements and negative effects in your life.

Things to Avoid on Narak Chaturdashi

Be careful while walking on the road on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. People do tantric rituals and throw the materials on the road. If you see fruit and black colored dolls or material on the road, do not place your foot on it or cross it.

How Maa Kali Pooja On Narak Chaturdashi Helps You

1. Worshipping Maa Kali on Narak Chaturdashi helps in fighting diseases and chronic illness.
2. It protects you from black magic.
3. You can overcome debts and financial problems in your life by doing pooja on this day.
4. If you are facing any problem in work or business, it will be solved.
5. Maa Kali worship nullifies the negative effect of Rahu and Shani.
6. You get the boon of protection from insults and wrongdoing by unknown people.

Rituals of this day

Bathing on this day is having religious importance. On this day to get rid of Narak (Hell), oil massage should be taken before bathing at the morning. At evening, deeps (lights) should be lightened for Yamraaj. At night, any odd numbers of deeps e.g. 11, 21 or 31 are lightened in the house (inside and outside both).

How to worship Narak Chaturdashi?

As mentioned above, Lord Krishna executed Demon Narkasur on this day so Lord Shri Krishana is worshipped with garland, incense sticks, deeps and rice by reciting below mantra:

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3533028402087894" data-ad-slot="5963781428" data-ad-format="auto" data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Vasudev sutam devam, narkasur mardanam|
Devki parmanandam, krishnam vande jagadgurum||

People who are worshipping in this way are becoming free from all their sins.

Story of Narak Chaturdashi

In ancient times, there was a king known as Rantidev. He was very religious and kind in his past-life. Because of the good deeds of his past life, he became a good human being in the present life. When he was about to die and messengers of Yam came to take his sole, they said to him angrily, ‘O King, we have come here to take you to the hell with us.? By hearing this, king was shocked and he asked them for the reason to taking him to the hell. They replied, ‘O King, you are famous for your good deeds in this world knows however, your misdeeds are known only by the God.? King asked, ‘Please do let me know about my misdeeds so that I can find out the solution for the same.’ They replied, ‘Once upon a time, a hungry Brahmin returns from your door and that is the reason you’ve to go to the Hell.’ By hearing this, King requested to the messengers, ‘Please give me only one year’s time.’ Messengers accepted his request immediately and they went back. King went to the sages to find out the solution of this problem. Sages said to him, ‘O King! On the fourteenth day of the Kartik Krishna Paksha you should fast and worship to Lord Krishna, feed the Brahmins, give them donations and alms, tell them about your previous offence, request them to forgive you for the same and then you will be free from all your misdeeds.’ King did the same as he was suggested by the sages and he was forgiven from all his misdeeds and redirected towards the Vishnu Lok (Heaven).

At night drainages are lightened by deeps (lights) to keep away Narak. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi is entering in house only in the absence of Narak.

Celebration of Diwali 2026 – Diwali is one of the biggest Hindu festivals, which is celebrated throughout India on the new moon. It falls on the fifteenth day of the Kartika, or Ashwin (october/november) month. It is performed in Indian communities all over the world. It is also called as the “festival of lights”, for the people, who traditionally light their house with small oil lamps (called diyas). They place these diyas in courtyards, verandahs, gardens and on roof-tops as well as outer walls. It is a harvest festival that starts the celebration of the Lunar New Year. Diwali has powerful astrological energies too.

This year, the celebration of Diwali will be happened on, Sunday, 8 November 2026. It always features the distribution of sweets and the pleasure of fireworks, but it is a seasonal and astrological carnival marking the transition from the aged lunar year to the new in India. The Sanskrit meaning of Deepaavali (a garland of lamps) is the perfect explanation of this marvelous Indian fest of lights. The lamps are lit in North India to remind us of Lord Rama’s homecoming after fourteen years in exile to his empire of Ayodhya after winning the tyrant Ravana, who had kidnaped his wife Sita and held her in his fort of Lanka.

Rama’s heroic actions are defined in the Hindu epic Ramayana and Diwali celebrates the conquest of virtue over vice. In the tale, Rama, the fair heir to the throne of Ayodhya, agrees for an exile in the forest because of his father’s vow to his devious stepmother. He was in his exile with his lovely wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Ramayana is the legend of his victory of evil with the aid of Hanuman (the monkey king) and the everlasting love of Sita.

Diwali signifies a lot of different things to the people across nation. In the Northern parts of India, Diwali celebrates Rama’s return to Ayondhya after the defeating of Ravana as well as his coronation as a king. The festival honors Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth) in Gujrat and the event is associated with the Goddess Kali in Bengal.

Celebration of Diwali 2026 – For Jain community, the day commemorates the passing into Nirvana of Lord Mahavira, the most recent of the Jain Tirthankaras, or saints. The lighting of the lamps is illustrated as a material alternate for the light of sacred knowledge that was quenched with Mahavira’s passing.

Everywhere, it signifies the regeneration of life, and so it is the good thing to dress in new clothes on the day of the event. It seems to have begun as a harvest carnival, yet, as the starting of the lunar New Year, it heralds the approach of wintry weather and the starting of a new sowing season.

Five Day Festival-Diwali

Diwali is a festival of five days which begins on the 15th day of the month of Kartika (Ashwin) according to the Hindu calendar. As per the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls in November 2026. During this time, gifts are exchanged, and festive food items are prepared.

Diwali marks the starting of the Hindu as well as Gujarati New Year and is performed with the lamps and candles along with lots of fireworks. It is the time to exchange sweets with friends and neighbors.

Cattles are decorated and worshipped by farmers in rural villages. Special veneration is offered to the cows as the manifestation of the Goddess in the Southern India. Candles and lamps are lit to offer as a greeting to Maa Lakshmi. Prosperity is not viewed as a corruptive power in Indian culture. Instead, a prosperous person is considered to have been pleased for the good activities of a past life. On this day, people distribute gifts and buy new items for the home as this is considered propitious and ensures contentment and wealth for the whole of the coming year. Business men (Marwadi) worship for richness on this day to Maa Lakshmi because it is assumed to give the best outcome for the year ahead.

Second Day – Kali Chaudas

Maa Kali (The Goddess of Strength) is worshipped on the second day. Food is prepared from pounded partly-cooked rice known as Poha or Pauva from the recent crop. This ritual is held in rural as well as in urban areas, especially in Western parts of India. Diwali celebrates the ending of the harvest period which is called as Kharif season when the fresh yield of rice is in but also marks the starting of the New Year. This day (Kali Choudas) also concentrates on abolishing idleness and evil. It is called as Narak Chaudas by the North Indians. They pray for the spirits of deceased loved ones.

Third Day – Diwali

On the third and most significant last day of the year as per lunar calendar, lamps are lighted and glow brightly in every house. It symbolizes awareness and encourages light on the reason of each day in the carnival. The objective is to memorize the reason throughout the coming year. Lakshmi Puja is executed on this day, awakening an admiration of prosperity and wisdom of responsibility towards it. Lakshmi, always portrayed as a very gorgeous woman who stands on a lotus. She has lotuses in diverse stages of bloom in her two hands and get into a lotus garland.

Cascades of gold coins are generally shown flowing by her hands, telling that those, who worship her with full devotion, get wealth. She always dresses in gold-embroidered red attire. Red symbolizes action and the golden lining declares prosperity. Mother Lakshmi is the energetic vigor of Vishnu who also appears as Lakshmi-Narayan – Lakshmi associated with Vishnu.

Lakshmi is the Goddess of prosperity while Ganesha is the God of Happiness. The worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha is done for spiritual prosperity and material abundance. According to the faithful believe, Lakshmi puja should not be ignored, lest poverty and distress fall upon those, who fail to memorize her. This Puja is executed in the evening as the Taurus and Leo ascendant are considered the best for maintaining the material profits for the year. During this time, old trade accounts are finalized and new books are opened. The books are worshipped in a particular ritual and participants are encouraged to eliminate anger, hate, and envy from their lives.

Fourth Day — Vishkarma

The fourth day of Diwali is known as Vishkarma Day which comes on the first day of lunar New Year. Also, the day is called as Padwa or Varsha Pratipada that marks the coronation of Emperor Vikramaditya. People celebrate the New Year by dressing up in new clothes. In addition to this, they wear jewellery and distribute sweets, dried fruits and other gift stuff among family members and business colleagues. This day is frequently used by manufacturers to worship for their tools so that it works well and makes revenue during the year ahead.

In the ancient times, the people in Gokul would celebrate a celebration in the honor of Lord Indra, worshipping him at the ending of each monsoon period. However, in one particular year, the Krishna halted the ritual of offering prayers to God Indra, who in a fit of rage poured down a deluge to destroy Gokul. Lord Krishna saved the people of Gokul by lifting up a mountain (known as Govardhan) and holding it as an umbrella over the people. So, Goverdhan Puja is done on this day to commemorate this act of God Krishna. Also, this day is observed as Annakoot and offering of prayers are done in the shrines. The deities are bathed with milk in Mathura and Nathadwara. After bathing, they dressed in unblemished attire, featuring jewelry of diamonds, pearls and other precious stones.

Fifth Day

On the fifth and last day (Balipratipada) of the festival, Bali, a strong titanic figure in the Indian Mythology, is recalled. Bali was the energetic demon-king of Paataala (the netherworld), who had bravely extended his empire over the earth too. On this day, Lord Vishnu in the form of Vaamana (a dwarfish Brahmin), addressed Bali requesting a boon, comprising the space equivalent to three of his steps. Bali famed for his kindness, approved the boon. However, the “dwarf” then came into a gigantic form and covered the entire earth with one step. He covered the sky with the second step and then asked Bali for the placement of his third step. Bali had no other choice so he presented his own head in front of him. Then Sri Vishnu kept his foot on Bali’s head, approaching him back to the netherworld, the lawful territory of Bali’s control. However, Bali prayed that he might be allowed to visit the earth once in a year. Then it was Vishnu’s turn to grant the boon. Thus, the goal of this day is to notice the positivity in others.

?>

The second day of (Shukla Paksh) of Kartika is also known as Bhaiya-Duj. In the Vedic era, Lord Yamraj (the Lord of Death) met with his sister Yamuna (Yami), who put the propitious Tilak on his forehead. They ate food and talked together, enjoying each other’s companionship, exchanging unique gifts as a voucher of their affection for each other. Yamraj pronounced that anyone, who gets the Tilak by his sister on this particular day, is truly blessed. Since that time, the ritual has been for brothers to meet their sisters for celebrating Bhaiyaduj. Sisters apply ‘Teeka’ on the forehead of brothers. Raksha Bandhan may be considered as “brothers’ day”, but it is the day dedicated to the sisters.

Several Myths Surround Diwali

Another myth traces the beginning of the occasion to the annual “examination tours” of Lakshmi (Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity). It is said that on this day, Maa Lakshmi goes around visiting the place of her devotees and sets up residence at home. She finds most excellent spruced up and most generous. Diwali is an event for spring cleaning, walls painting and decorating the floor with eye-catching designs wrought in colored powder or paste made with rice.

The killing of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna after a long march from Dvaraka in the West to Pragjyotishapura in the East and the overcoming by Lord Rama of the demon Ravana in Lanka and his successful march back to Ayodhya is held to signify the integration of the four corners of the earth of Bharata Varsha with the victory of good over evil.

The chief custom traditionally linked with Diwali is gambling. Friends meet to play the games of chance, dice or cards. The “addicts” seek legality for their pastime by communicating to the celestial game of dice performed by the great God Shiva with his partner Parvati – a scene beautifully sculpted at Kailash temple. Others rationalize that this is to remise oneself of the agility of lady fortune and to create a sense of balance in our aim of material success.

We celebrate Diwali and light lamps or diyas to express the joy of the return of Rama and Sita and welcome them back home. Thus, keeping the house and environment clean and well decorated is very important. Maa Lakshmi likes homes that are clean and decorated and she stays permanently in such homes. When you make Maa Lakshmi happy with the cleanliness, decorations, and festivities, you get happiness, luck, and wealth in return from her. Decorate the home with diyas, flowers, and decorations.
