How to Prepare for Dhanteras
Dhanteras is the first day of the five day-long festival of Diwali and people wait for it with great enthusiasm and zeal. There is a custom of cleaning homes that starts several days before Diwali. The entire house is cleaned, and unwanted articles are thrown away. Homes are decorated with lights, Diya’s, and flowers. People paint their homes with a new and fresh look. Rangoli is made on the front door with powdered colors of bright colors. People either draw and paint small-sized feet of Maa Lakshmi or stick stickers of the feet in the pooja room, door, bedrooms, and hallway. The feet stickers are also put on the main door in the front depicting the entry of Lakshmi maa in the house.

Clay Diya’s of small lamps are lit in the door and homes signifying driving away of evil, the defeat of darkness by light, and the victory of good over evil. People sing bhajans and worship Maa Lakshmi. The lighting of lamps or Diya’s helps in purifying the environment. There is also a custom of giving gifts to family members, relatives, and friends on this day. Buying brass articles, statues of Lord Ganesha and Feet of Maa Lakshmi is preferred. People also give gifts like sweets, dry fruits, gift hampers, Lakshmi and Ganesh Yantra. Decorating the door with Rangoli is a special activity at the festival. People decorate the homes and hand door hangings.
