Akshaya Tritiya is a very important day in Hindu tradition.
This celebration happens on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha. On this day, good deeds have “Akshaya” (everlasting and never-diminishing) results. It is also very important to give to charity on this day. People think that donations made on this day can’t be changed.
Let’s look at what this day means. This day is when both the Sun and the Moon are at their highest points. The Moon is at its highest exaltation at 33 degrees in the zodiac, and the Sun is at its highest exaltation at 10 degrees. On this day, the Sun and Moon usually stay at these exact angles.
If a birth chart has a lot of good yogas, they won’t all come true until the Sun and Moon are strong. Because of this, the prayers (japa) and charity given on this day make the Sun and Moon stronger, which lets the person get all of their blessings. This makes sure that all good yogas work, makes the horoscope stronger, and makes it easier to get things done.
This was also the day that Lord Surya presented the Pandavas the Akshaya Patra. If the Sun blesses you on this day, it signifies that you will always have enough money, food, and good fortune in your home.
Also, this was the day that Lord Krishna and Sudama got back together. On this day, the Moon is worshipped, and Lord Krishna is a member of the Lunar dynasty (Chandravansh). The moon stands for the mind, while Sudama stands for unselfish devotion. This means that God is happy when someone gives their full focus to God with pure and selfless devotion, much like Lord Krishna was happy with Sudama’s devotion. The Bhagavata Purana says that Devarshi Narada was born as Sudama during the Dwapara Yuga.
Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Yugadi Tithi. The word “Yugadi” literally means “Yuga + Adi,” which means “the start of an era.” This day is called Yugadi because it marks the commencement of the Treta Yuga. The Treta Yuga was when Lord Rama, a member of the Solar dynasty (Suryavansh), was born. This is the day when the Sun is at its strongest, which marks the start of the Treta Yuga.
On this day, Lord Parashurama was also born. Legend has it that Lord Parashurama killed the Kshatriyas twenty-one times. In this context, Kshatriya refers to mental states defined by Rajas and Tamas characteristics, rather than a distinct caste. His actions were meant to get rid of the power of Rajas and Tamas and promote Brahmanical principles (Sattva).
Lord Shiva chose Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera to be the guardians of wealth and prosperity in the universe on this day. So, buying gold, silver, and other valuable things on this day is quite important.
This day is particularly important since the Sun and Moon are at their strongest. The Vedas say that the Moon has a strong effect on people’s minds, while the Sun is seen as the soul of the whole universe. On this day, the mind and soul realize their full potential and become messengers of happiness, wealth, and success.
On this day, twelve things are thought to be very lucky: a cow, land, sesame seeds, gold, ghee, clothes, grains, jaggery, silver, salt, honey, and a gift to a female (kanya). Anyone who is hungry can get food donations. The person who gives something to someone without asking for it gets complete credit. For helping a servant, you get one-fourth of the merit.
Kanya Daan, or giving a daughter in marriage, is seen as the most essential gift. Because of this, many people get married on this day. Any act of kindness on Akshaya Tritiya becomes Akshaya (everlasting). The donor gets to the Sun’s residence, Surya Lok. People who fast on this day get wealth, success, growth, and prosperity.
All the good and negative things you do on this day, such washing, being generous, chanting, doing rituals, studying on your own, and making sacrifices to your ancestors, become Akshaya (everlasting). So, this day should only be used for good things.
