Katha of Duttatraiya Jayanti
Once upon a time Goddess Parvati, Lakshmi and Savitri were conversing together and they were feeling proud upon their fidelity (Pativrata). By seeing this, Narad Muni appeared in front of the Parvati to break her proud. He started praising Anusuiya, the wife of sage Atri. When Narada went from there, Parvati was very jealous with Anusuiya and she requested to the Lord Shiva to dissolve the character of Anusuiya. After visiting Parvati, Narada Muni went to Goddess Lakshmi and started praising Anusuiya and Lakshmiji was also get upset by listening her praise. She also requests to the Lord Vishnu to dissolve the character of Anusuiya. Again, Narada went to meet Savitri and provoked her for the same. She convinced Brahma (her husband) to dissolve the fidelity of Anusuiya.
One day, all three Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva went to the Anusuiya's house to check his fidelity. With this intention they asked to the Anusuiya, “We are very hungry, please give us some food.” Anusuiya believed in “Athithi Devo Bhava” (The guest is God) so she asked them to get refreshed and she herself prepared food for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. When Anusuiya served food to them with reverence, they refused to have the food. They asked her, “First you get naked then only we'll have food.” Anusuiya understands their intention; she smiled and splashed the 'Charnodak' (holy water given by her husband sage Atri for her safety) on their legs. When the drops of 'Charnodak; touched to their bodies, they converted into the little children and forgotten their originality. Then Anusuiya served food to them and thereafter they started living together very comfortably.
After long time, when Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh did not return to home, their wives began worrying for them. They asked everyone in heaven if anyone knows about them . By seeking them they reached to the Narad Muni. He reveals that he saw three of them last time going on the way of Anusuiya’s house.
After hearing this Lakshmi, Savitri and Parvati reached to Anusuiya's house and they asked about their husbands. Anusuiya indicated to the cradle and said that if they can recognize their husbands. By hearing this Lakshmi tried to identify her husband, but that was Lord Shiva and she feels great embarrassment. Then Lakshmi, Savitri and Parvati requested Anusuiya to her return their husbands; on their request Anusuiya said they will be the same children because they have drank my milk. At the same time a
unique light filled in the room and incarnation of Divine Triniy emerged from the Brahmha, Vishnu and Shiva. He has three heads and six hands this Avatar was the Duttatraiya. Thereafter, Anusuiya splashed the Charnodak again on the feets of the three little children and they become again Brahmha, Vishnu and Shive. That day is called as Dattatraiya Jayanti.
