Sharad Navratri in 2016 is going to be held on 1st October and will continue for 9 days until 10th of October.

Navratri is a festival of Hindus which is celebrated all over India with devotion, love and fervor. It is also known as Navratras. The Navratri’s mood is very colorful & unique. It incorporates worship along with commemoration by the means of song and dance. Navratri basically means “Nine Nights” (“Nav” means nine and “Ratri” means nights).

These nights are devoted to the veneration of Goddess Durga (Maa Durga) who exists in various forms and is the appearance of the absolute energy that pervades the world. Prayers are performed for Mother Goddess during the period of Navratri. Additionally, during these days, Goddess Durga grants all blessings of her devotees and removes their ills and evils and ensures smooth life for them.

Navratri falls two times in a year

Navratri in March/April – known as Vasant Navratri is the more popular as it is for householders. Navratri in October/November period is known as Sharad Navratri which is good for obtaining success in endeavors. The Navratri event will begin on Saturday, the 1st of October this year and will carry on for 9 days until Monday, the 10th of October. Lord Rama performed this to attain spiritual power to achieve his Incarnation purpose – that of slaying Ravana.

Schedule of Navratri October 2016

1st of October 2016 – Navratri – Occasion of the nine nights begins.

Navratri’s every night is devoted to different forms of Maa Durga.

This embraces Maa Shailputri (the daughter of Parvatraj Himalaya), wife of Lord Shiva and mother of God Ganesha and Kartikeya;

Maa Brahmachaarini-, who provides the message of Maa Kushmaanda, who gives the basic requirements to the world;

Skand Maa, who gives the present of differentiation of right from wrong to the world;

Maa Kaatyayini, who persistently battles against the sin and deceitful entities;

Maa Kaalratri, who killed Raktabeej ( a demon who construct a demon from every drop of blood that fell from his body. Goddess finally licked the blood before it could reach the earth and hence conquered him);

Maa Chaamunda, who killed two demons–Chanda and Munda and restored harmony;

Maa Maha Gauri who also release the world of evil forces;

Mata Sidhidaarti, who is a treasure house of supernatural Powers (Yantra Tantra) and Knowledge (Gyaan).

It is also said that the nine days are divided and dedicated to the Trinity of God honored in a female form in which for three days Maa Durga (Goddess of courage) is worshipped, Maa Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) and Maa Saraswati (Goddess of awareness and Art).

On the fifth day, that is, Lalita Panchami books are gathered; lamp is lighted to call up Saraswati. On the eighth and ninth day, Yagna (sacrifice presented to the fire) is performed to honor divine Goddess and bid her farewell.

This time period of Navratri also allows for the recitation of Holy Scriptures like Durga Sapshudi from Markanday Puran.

This says how Goddess Durga was blessed with weapons by our Trinity of Gods to defeat Maheshasur, the demon who had forced Gods to go from heaven and take shelter on earth. Melodic recitations (Kirtans) by renowned musicians are offered for the advantage of the Goddess and devotees.
