Shivratri Worship for Freedom from Debt A shivratri falling on a Tuesday,as on 17th July 2012, carries special importance as worship of Lord Shiva on this day may bless the devotee with freedom from all kinds of debts.

First of all I wish to clarify that the Shivratri falling on 17th July 2012 is not Mahashivratri. There are twelve or thirteen Shivratris in a lunar year, one each month.

The fourteenth lunar day or Chaturdashi of the waning phase of the Moon in every lunar month is celebrated as Shivratri. This lunar date is called Krishna PakshChaturdashi and it should be in effect at the midnight hour as per the local time.

The Shivratri falling in the lunar month of Phalgun or Maagh as per the Hindu calendar is known as Mahashivratri or ‘The Great Night of Lord Shiva’ and has special importance.

On the day of Shivratrior Mahashivratrithe devotees of Lord Shiva go to temples and holy shrines to offer prayers and please Lord Shiva.

Devotees keep a day and night fast and bathe Shivalingawith milk, yoghurt, honey, sandalwood paste and rose water while chanting the mantra ‘Om NamahaShivaye’. It is believed that worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratri and especially Mahashivratri pleases the Lord and frees the devotee of all his or her past sins. Lord Shiva’s worship also liberates from the cycle of birth and death givingmoksha or salvation.

The women devotees seek appeasement of goddess Parvati (Shivas Consort) for happy and prosperous married life through marital bliss. Unmarried girls pray for getting an ideal husband like the Lord Shiva.

Special Importance of Shivratri falling on a Tuesday …

A Shivratri, as on 17th July 2012, falling on a Tuesday carries special importance. It is also called ‘BhoumPradoshVrat’. As Mangal or Mars is the deity controlling any kind of debt so worship on such Shivratri is believed to free one of all debts in life.
For all those who are in trouble due to heavy debts should keep a day long fast, bathe a shivlinga with milk, yoghurt, honey, sandalwood paste and rose water and offer leaves of Bael (Aeglemarmelos).

After sunset on this day light a panchmukhi lamp (lamp with five wicks) with cow’s ghee and recite at least a mala (on rosary of 108 beads) of the following mantra with faith and concentration:
