Goverdhan Poojad on the first day of Kartik Shukla's or on the day of Dipawali. This is festival is specially celebrated by the residents of the city of Gokul. On this day Annakoot is prepared by cow's dung and then Lord Shri Krishana is worshiped with his milkman friends and cows. Different variety of foods are prepared and offered to the Gods in temples.
The story of Goverdhan pooja (Annakoot)
One day Lord Krishna saw that all the residents of Gokul are busy in preparing many kinds of foods and dishes. Out of curiosity he asked them that why they are preparing many kinds of foods, they replied that this preparation is being done for the Lord Indra. Because, only if Lord Indra would be happy, residents of Gokul will get the rain and the problem of livelihood would be solved. By hearing this Lord Krishna condemned Indra and alleged him. He also said to the residents that you must worship the God who is visible to you and he himself will come to accept the offerings made by you (residents of Gokul). Milkmans said to the Lord Krishna that you should not criticize the Lord Krishna in this way as he is the one who is helping them to survive. By hearing this Lord Krishna said, “What kind of power Indra is having which is helping us for raining? The mount of Goverdhan is more beautiful and powerful than Indra, so we must worship the mount Goverdhan as it is visible too.” Lord Krishan made residents impress by his ingenuity of speech and also agreed them to worship the mount Goverdhan. They gathered around the Goverdhan to worship it.
Because Lord Indra not worshiped, he felt insulted and angrily ordered his clouds to go to the Gokul and by the holocaustic torrential rain, destroy the Gokul village. By seeing mount size holocaustic clouds, villagers became worried, they all went to the shelter of Shri Krishna and asked him, “Now what we will do, as Lord Indra wants to sink our village in rain?” Lord Krishna made the villagers calm and said, “You all go to the shelter of mount Goverdhan with your families and cows, he will protect all of you.” All villagers followed the Lord Krishna's instruction and gathered around the mount Goverdhan. Lord Shri Krishan lifted up the mount Goverdhan on his little finger and all the villagers come down under the Goverdhan and for seven days they happily stayed there; a single drop of rain could not touch them. It was a great surprise for Lord Indra, he realized the glory of the God and by leaving his arrogant attitude he went to the shelter of Lord Shri Krishna and apologized. On seventh day Lord Krishna re-placed the mount Goverdhan and by remembering that day Goverdhan pooja is celebrated every year since then.
