Bhai Dooj is the last festival of Diwali
On this day sisters are putting tilak to their brothers, feeding them sweets, praying for their long life and well being. This festival is the symbol of the love and affection of brother-sister.
First StoryIt is said that on this day Yamuna (river) put the tilak to her brother Yam (Yamraaj) and asked for the boon that on this day who so ever will bathe in my water, should not see the Yam. Yamraaj has given this boon to his sister and since then the custom of putting tilak to brothers started.
Second StoryAs per another story there was a great affection and love between brother Yam and sister Yamuna, the children of the Sun. Once, Yam was extremely busy in the political affairs and he forgotten his sister Yamuna. The day he remembered his sisters tilak he directly reached to her. The sister Yamuna put the tilak to his brother happily and he said to his brother that on this day sisters who put tilak to his brothers, their brothers must be protected. That was the second day of the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month and the festival of Bhai Dooj celebrated since then.
Rituals of the dayOn this day brothers should take oil massage and should bathe in Yamuna (river). If bathing in Yamuna is not possible then brothers should bathe at sisters place. Sisters should feed their brothers and give coconut after putting tilak. On this day if sister feeds her brother by her hand, brother's life increases and they are overcoming from problems of their life. Thereafter, brothers are giving gifts of cloths, jewelry to sisters. The day is important to worship Yam and Yamuna.
