As per the Mayan Calendar a great world cycle is ending on the day of winter solstice this year which is 21st Dec 2012. The world is said to change drastically with terrible destructive events. Some believe that the world will end completely while others say that it will not end but only enter a new era with massive changes.

Well for some purely commercial minded people this is a good time to make money out of fooling others. They are charging money for providing information about ways to escape this hypothetical eventuality.
Those few who know the truth, yes truth and only truth just laugh at it and wonder at the crass stupidity of such speculations and selfish commercial interests of some purely materialistic people. The truth is that everything that is created has to end at certain time but the time of such cosmic eventuality is not yet.

As per Hindu Mythology the world goes through four distinct periods called Yugas, namely Satya Yuga, Dwapra Yuga, Treta Yuga and then Kali Yuga. The periods have natural characteristics and tend to mould the collective thought in a particular direction.
The western philosophers considered time as a linear concept, whereas our wise sages knew its cyclic nature and revealed the four world cycles called Yugas.Let us look at the basic characteristics of these Yugas:
Satya Yuga: It is the Golden age or ‘Swarna Yuga’, and it is believed to be of 1,728,000 years duration. Righteousness, goodness and positive thought are the basic characteristics of this period. Good dominates over evil and has its say.
But then things start deteriorating gradually, and the world enters the next Yuga.
Dwapra Yuga: This is believed to last for 1,296,000 years. It is the Silver age with slightly degraded values.
Treta Yuga: It is a further degradation and called a Copper age. It lasts for 864,000 years. Gradually the negative forces start dominating and the world moves into yet more negative cycle of thoughts, actions and events.
Kali Yuga:At present we are living in this Yuga. This is the last of the four cycles and in it evil dominates. It is of 432,000 years duration. Gradually things turn too bad. A world Saviour or Avatara comes to restore values and wake up the ignorant humans and prepares conditions to move towards another round of cycle.
At present it is believed that only about 5000 years have passed since the start of the current Kali Yuga.

All the four Yugas combined together form one great Yuga or Mahayuga:
Satya Yuga = 1,728,000 years
Dwapara Yuga = 1,296,000 years
Treta Yuga = 864,000 years
Kail Yuga = 432,000 years

One Day of Brahma or Kalpa …
One day of Brahma is equal to 1000 such Mahayugas thus:
One day of Brahma=4320000 X1000=432, 0000000 years of Earth time
The Night of Brahma or Pralaya …
This is just a day then comes night of equal period, during which the creation dissolves and there is only darkness and no light anywhere.
Age of Brahma …
The Brahma lives for 100 cosmic years, which means 360 (Brahma days +nights)
So age of Brahma=360 X (4320000000+4320000000) =3110400000000 Earth Years
This is also called the Mahakalpa
Complete Destruction or Mahapralya …
So after 3110400000000 Earth years everything is completely destroyed there is no existence at all but yet HE (God) remains.
Even this complete dissolution is not final and as and when HE, God or whatever you call this ever existing force so decides the cosmos and everythingis recreated.
No basis of 21st Dec 2012 Prophecies …
Thus we see as we are only into about 5000 years of the present Kali Yuga a Pralaya(Cosmic Destruction) is roughly about 432000-5000=427000 years away, so free your mind of the unnecessary fear created by some.
