2010 Libra Period of Confusion
Mercury moves into his retrograde phase three times a year as a rule, for about three weeks each time. This year Mercury hits reverse four times, which is quite unusual. The retro phase marks a time of confusion and misunderstandings, which can affect arrangements, travel, transport, appliances, machinery and communications. The breakdowns that occur are a function of neglect, inattention, simple misunderstandings or component failure. They will often bring to the fore the very contingency we should have planned for—and didn't. During the retro period, and even for a week or two before and after, in the Mercury Shadow, we need to be aware of this tendency. It is best to put off major decisions, or signing crucial documents and agreements. It is not exactly wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely they will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!
Mercury's first retro cycle begins on Boxing Day, December 26th, 2009, in Capricorn, the Sea-Goat. This is a time when hard work, organization, and planning will stand you in good stead. If you have not previously conducted your affairs in this manner, you may now wish that you had. You may not initiate or control the circumstances, but you will be called upon to measure up, to take a responsible position. Life may seem to be more sombre than usual. Your timing is off and you are more easily discouraged by minor annoyances. The answer is to forge ahead. Forget instant gratification. Wait for the rewards to come later. Real estate transactions, repairs or other matters related to your home or property, family discussions, family business transactions, and correspondence with or short trips to visit relatives are likely to be disrupted. Under the Mercury retrograde phase, we can uncover gems by paying attention to matters that we otherwise might just skate over. The Cosmic Trickster turns direct again on January 15, at the Capricorn New Moon, which is conjunct fortunate Venus. Entertaining at home is favoured, as is improving the quality and appearance of your residence, but remember that the shadow phase lasts until Feb 4.
Mercury's second reverse motion cycle begins in Taurus, the sign of the Bull, on April 18th. This phase should not be too disruptive, but can lead to disarray in matters connected with joint income and social status, acquired through marriage or business partnership. Common goals and values play no small part. You feel more intense with regard to social contacts as well as romance or sexual encounters, especially from the standpoint of the psychological motivations and behaviour patterns involved. This can be a productive period to participate in group therapy, as past issues will surface. You may be kept busier than usual handling inheritance, tax or insurance matters, preparing investment analysis, and dealing with debt. Be sure to read the small print and pay attention to the details. This is not a good phase in which to ask for loans or favours, or to collect those you are owed. Mercury moves forward on May 11th, with the shadow lasting till May 29.
Mercury's third retro cycle begins in Virgo on August 20th, with Mars and Venus conjunct in Libra, and Jupiter in Aries opposing Saturn in Libra. Virgo is your solar twelfth house, so there's information that must be kept confidential, and you won't be be inclined to share your ideas during this period. Gathering information about the past or contact with people from your past is likely. Messages you receive may be very subtle, or contain hidden meanings meant only for your understanding—so pay careful attention, as the retro phase can add an aura of mystification that may see you losing track of what's really important, especially with your sense of self, your personal image being inflated by Venus and Mars, which may see love, or at least desire, coming to you in waves of passion. Potential partners who have grandiose ideas, or hold out the promise of some successful venture, are not likely to be able to deliver, no matter how well-intentioned they are. Watch where you spend your dough. Follow your intuition, get in touch with your subconscious, and pay closer attention to your dreams. Mercury moves forward on September 12th, with the shadow phase around till Sep 27.
Mercury's fourth and final retro phase for the year begins on December 10, 2010, in Capricorn again. A lot of issues from the past have emerged during the past twelve months, concerning your career and your public image, your family and domestic situation, and how both of these affect your own personal idea of what you are and how you should look—but now is the time to get all this straightened out, so you can take advantage of Jupiter's very positive move into fiery Aries in January 2011, when partnership and marriage proposals may come to fruition. Be sure to make your position clear, especially regarding the domestic situation, lest some misunderstanding get you in deeper water than you'd like. You may have the urge to splurge! The issue of wealth connected with social status may arise and joint income or the finances of a joint venture will be under pressure. Don't leave things till the last minute, especially Christmas and New Year arrangements. Make sure your household insurance is in effect, check your home for possible fire hazards. Watch your step to prevent falls, cuts, and other mishaps around the house, and go out of your way to avoid angry domestic scenes. Mercury returns to direct motion in Sagittarius on December 30th, so be sure your travel bookings are straight, for the shadow phase will dog your footsteps until January 18th. Your Full Moon on March 30th is in a stressful square aspect to dark Pluto in Capricorn and conjunct stern Saturn in the first degree of Libra. Ouch. You need some recognition of your talents and your achievements, but this is not easy to get. Partners display a good deal of ambition, mixed with vanity and bad judgment, but will still try to charm you to their way of thinking. Use your intuition to curb any excess of enthusiasm, for you can expect a confrontation over home life vs career or responsibilities. A family member features in the struggle, but use your willpower to get to the bottom of things. Be thorough, if you want to succeed. Keen observation, direct confrontation, and deliberate action are your best strategies. Keep your plans to yourself and don't betray a confidence. Occult or mystical influences are at work and matters from the past will soon demand resolution, even transformation. Don't get depressed; deal with the frustration—and don't get caught up in a witch hunt.
Your New Moon comes on October 7th. A new start in your life is indicated, especially with regard to your financial situation and your emotional commitments. A steamy love affair is in the wind for eligible Librans, something which is likely to see you getting a complete makeover in everything that you value in life. Career and public life will be subject to change, a separation, or a cyclical ending, associated with a new beginning that will produce new developments which aid in the achievement of your hopes and wishes over the months to come. Venus, your life-ruler, is pursuing Mars through your twelfth house of secrets as Jupiter is preparing to turn retrograde in fiery Aries on July 23rd. Venus and Mars meet in Libra in mid-August, so the potential for a love affair of major proportions is there, which may be culminated in marriage or a serious commitment, wither this year or in 2011, when Jupiter returns to Aries, your seventh house of marriage and partnership for the year. For now, a secret attraction is in the air, though it may surface with a vengeance next month. The Cancer New Moon always marks a new start for the Scales, and since this is a Solar Eclipse, you'll probably find that you can't make an omelette with breaking some eggs. A Lunar Eclipse comes with the Full Moon in Gemini on December 21st, the Solstice, awakening an unexpected outburst or upset from someone near you, as your Sun is under quite a lot of pressure, especially if you are born in the early degrees of Libra. The eclipse creates a stressful Grand Cross, as it is square to disruptive Uranus and over-confident Jupiter, which both oppose your Sun. Mercury and Jupiter are under pressure too, just as they were at the Solar Eclipse in June, so this should bring matters that have been bubbling beneath the surface to a very visible head. You are unlikely to be able to control the circumstances you encounter during this period. Your normal schedule or the plans you have made may be disrupted by the weather, war, or other forces in your outer environment. Though you may not be able to control the disruptions themselves, they may stimulate you to adopt an unusual or different approach to things on a personal level. Communications and travel in particular are likely to be subject to disruption, as Mercury is retrograde.
