2010 Aries Period of Confusion
Mercury moves into retrograde motion three times a year for about three weeks each time. This phase heralds a time of confusion and misunderstandings that can affect arrangements, travel, transport, appliances, machinery and communications. The breakdowns that occur are a function of neglect, inattention, simple misunderstandings or component failure. They will often bring to the fore the very contingency we should have planned for and didn't. When the retrograde phase occurs, watch out for such possibilities as well as putting off major decision-making or the signing of crucial documents and agreements. We tend to miss things while Mercury is in reverse motion and then have to come back and do them again. A process of review in the retrograde phase can efficiently show where problems might lie and help us with damage control or the mending of things. Double check arrangements at these times! What you think you've said and what others have understood will often prove to be two different things.
The year begins with Mercury in reverse, tail turned in Capricorn and clashing with Mars retrograde in Leo. Don't take ill-judged risks, don't hit the accelerator instead of the brake, and don't speak before you know the facts. Crucial choices will come in the work of repair or remedy, so don't jump the wrong way under pressure. Go back and fix things, rather than getting huffy. Prepare for confusion, misunderstanding or delay in dealings with authority, career or in communication generally. Take on a new persona to get it sorted: a new basis for holding your own. Self-assertion is the requirement and gift of this year. Don't just blaze or drop the head and charge, negotiate the path. You'll make an important career decision, but realize what it is in retrospect. Mercury moves forward on January 15, emerging from the shadow phase on February 4.
In mid April, if you're listening for the familiar jingle of change for an extra latte or chilli burger, you might be disappointed. Mercury reverses in Taurus, the 'dollar' Bull on April 18, churning up bills, bank statements and bucks into a whirl of confusion. Sort the fiscals by communicating clearly about what's to be paid, saved or spent. Don't argue over dosh and don't let misunderstandings overwhelm you. You'll have a reversal or shift with money, unexpected expenses or changes with income or outgoings. Remember, Aries, it's a matter of sums, and black figures are better than red. If nothing adds up the way it should, consult someone who thinks practically, then start again. You'll need to talk, explain, negotiate or just figure out what went wrong. You may have to wait out a delay or overcome a glitch. Mercury moves forward on May 11, emerging from the shadow phase on May 29.
Mercury's third reverse motion cycle for the year comes in Virgo and begins on Aug 20. Work or health concerns will be highlighted; you'll find that delays, unexpected turns of events, or communication problems will dog daily routine, sending you off on another track, or perhaps backtracking over something you thought was done and dusted. There will be tension with co-workers, or you'll manage in the absence of familiar faces or support. Your routines will be out of kilter, or altered by a hitch or glitch. Systems, devices or vehicles will be problematic, especially those used in work-related circumstances. Service early, don't regret later! Delays with news, goods or info will pop up; somehow there'll be a foul-up with rules, regulations or difficult authorities. It's in the detail, not your favourite thing, so get the head down and get the small stuff right. If there are negotiations over money or conditions, make them plain, practical and achievable. The Messenger moves forward on Sep 12, emerging from the shadow on Sep 27.
The last 'turn tail' for Mercury comes in Capricorn on Dec 10. Once again, the arena of career is in focus as communications or dealings with authority, the public or professional links go awry or hit a fuzzy or testing patch. Try to anticipate any problems, double check arrangements or schedules, and stick to clear and simple speech or instructions. You may find yourself back with past duties or connections, or you'll be out of touch with the current lot. Redirect your career efforts or the raft of responsibilities, or you'll step aside or out of the game for a time. If situations or people seem to go against you, back off a little and see if you can get to the root of where things are going wrong. Mercury slips back into Sagittarius on Dec 18. Communications with overseas or touching on study or the law will come into the frame. You'll look to the wider world for a solution or seek legal redress for a problem. This is not a favourable time for travel, although necessity may demand it. News from afar may alter the big picture. Mercury moves forward on Dec 30.

Your New Moon comes on April 14, signalling a new start with your appearance, image, or your personal style and connections. The routines of work or health will feature in this, especially as Saturn has rolled back to Virgo and challenges Uranus in Pisces, moving forward. You'll need to shift the foundations of what you do or how you do it, or you'll watch them shift. Open to a wider view of what's possible, but also to a clear assessment of capability. Focus on the right mix of creative or spiritual and practical or remunerative. Good contacts will assist. Vision, higher education, or overseas travel or links will feature.
There are two Full Moons for you, in the first and last degree of your sign, creating an auspicious or defining period from Sep 23 to October 23. You'll see where you actually stand with many people and situations. With the Sun just in Libra and Saturn already there, squaring off the Lunar Nodes, Sep 23 will bring pressure or tension that may well see an ending or cessation put in place, as reserve, inhibition or separating streams take a grip on your life and the lives of those you deal closely with. You may find you're at odds?or at a parting of the ways. Love or money will be the issue, but, equally, it may be unclear as to how to proceed. October 23 represents a last ditch effort that could turn things round, but only if new strategies, practices or people play a part. You may have been sitting on a solution for a time without realizing it. Otherwise, it's 'goodnight, nurse' to the people, associations or involvements that no longer gel, or to the problems beyond remedy. Trust yourself, your own efforts and your own initiative. Equally, if a new association works, strengthen it.

Eclipses of both the Sun and the Moon often indicate the end of a cycle, or a significant change in the direction or pattern of the affairs governed by the house in which the eclipse falls. Eclipses of the Sun may affect work, direction and relations with people in authority. Eclipses of the Moon may affect matters of home, family and emotions as well as relations with women and children. Both may affect your health.
A New Moon and Solar Eclipse comes in Capricorn on Jan 15. Changes in profession or with a career connection will lead to disruption or cyclical end. A familiar face will pass from the ranks or you'll finish with a particular line of responsibility or duty. Someone may pull the plug on a larger situation that affects your individual efforts or involvements. There will be an end to a line of authority or obligation, especially where dealings with the public are in the frame.
A Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse comes in Capricorn on June 26, 2010. There'll be drama or intensity as you negotiate or test yourself against an obdurate individual or situation. Authorities or professional people will be involved, as you try to shift the ground with career or responsibilities. Pressures or changes with home or family life will push against the obligations or demands you face. Something will have to give and, as it won't be you, it'll have to be at one end or the other of the balance of personal and professional, public and private. A change or an ending is indicated, one that will push into new arenas of endeavour or contact. Travel, study or legal matters may also be in the picture through Jupiter in your sign and, with Uranus there as well, you'll respond in an unusual manner or with excitement, taking an entirely different course or undergoing a dramatic change.
A New Moon and a total Solar Eclipse comes in Cancer on July 11, 2010, closing a door or ending a cycle with domestic or family life, perhaps through changes or choices around the issues of love, money, work or health. There'll be a significant alteration in the family group, or there may even be a relocation of the home base. Emotion will run high at this point, but you could well find it draining or frustrating, so make sure you look after yourself, especially through diet and proper patterns of sleep or rest. Someone else's emotions or needs may eclipse your own, pressing you to give more than you feel able to. If you're set to make a break, make it a clean one.
A Full Moon and total Lunar Eclipse comes in Gemini on Dec 21, 2010. As Lady Moon opposes Mercury reversed in Sagittarius when she pulls a momentary disappearing act, the art of communications will be under pressure or temporarily lost to you or to someone close. In addition, the Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Gemini square off Uranus, master of the radical, perverse or plain disturbing, as he floats backwards in Pisces. The unexpected will leap out of the blue to excite, upset, inspire?or turn things in reverse. Someone else's emotions or responses will burn bright, or alter their character completely. Expect a hit or a backlash in communications; you'll find you're wrestling with a surge of ideas, news or talk that'll leave you reeling, or send you running for the door.
