2010 Aquarius Period of Confusion
Mercury moves into his retrograde phase three times a year as a rule, for about three weeks each time. This year Mercury hits reverse four times, which is quite unusual. The retro phase marks a time of confusion and misunderstandings, which can affect arrangements, travel, transport, appliances, machinery and communications. The breakdowns that occur are a function of neglect, inattention, simple misunderstandings or component failure. They will often bring to the fore the very contingency we should have planned for—and didn't. During the retro period, and even for a week or two before and after, in the Mercury Shadow, we need to be aware of this tendency. It is best to put off major decisions, or signing crucial documents and agreements. It is not exactly wise to make important decisions while Mercury is retrograde, since it is likely they will be clouded by misinformation, poor communication and careless thinking. Mercury is all about mental clarity and the power of the mind, so when Mercury is retrograde these intellectual characteristics tend to be less acute than usual. Make sure you pay attention to the small print!
Mercury's turned retrograde on Boxing Day, December 26th, 2009, in Capricorn, the sign of the Sea-Goat, your twelfth house. Information slides into view that must be kept confidential, but you won't be inclined to share your thoughts or ideas with others anyway. Information about the past, or contact with people from your past is in the stars, and you might be inclined to take covert action. Messages you receive at this time may be very subtle or contain hidden meanings meant only for your understanding. Under this influence you are encouraged to follow your intuition, get in touch with your subconscious, and pay closer attention to your dreams. The Cosmic Trickster turns direct again on January 15, at the Capricorn New Moon, which is conjunct fortunate Venus, so communications may arise with a lover from the past, and you can make progress helping the underprivileged. Mercury still behaves as if he were retrograde during the shadow phase, which lasts until Feb 4.
Mercury's second reverse motion cycle begins in Taurus, the sign of the Bull, on April 18th. This phase with Merc square Mars and square your natal Sun can lead to disarray in matters connected with home, family, and your domestic considerations. The focus of your attention turns to such things as real estate transactions, repairs or other matters related to your home or property, family discussions, family business transactions, and correspondence with or short trips to visit relatives. Be sure all the paperwork is accurate and up to date, as trying to get things done is frustrating. Incorrect information or directions may cause you to be too early, or too late. The wretched car may break down, or transportation delays trash your travel schedule. Buying a car or other equipment may be beset by snags. Others may say things, or use methods that provoke you. Avoid rash behaviour; make sure you understand any information you receive. No matter what the headaches, you still make measurable progress. You are likely to be more competitive or aggressive, which can help you accomplish more. Protect yourself against airborne colds and fever and take extra precautions when handling electrical equipment and volatile materials. You may also be inspired under this influence to collect and restore family heirlooms, gather information on your family's genealogy and other aspects of family history, or visit your childhood home. Mercury moves forward on May 11th, with the shadow lasting till May 29.
Mercury's third retro cycle begins in Virgo on August 20th, with Mars and Venus conjunct in Libra, and Jupiter in Aries opposing Saturn in Libra. Virgo is your solar eighth house, so psychological analysis, or assessment and development of your talent and skills may require extra attention. Joint income may also be the subject of plans or discussions. You may be kept busier than usual handling inheritance, tax or insurance matters, preparing investment analysis, and allocating funds for the repayment or collection of debts, so be sure to read the fine print and don't take on extra responsibilities in this area. You may also seek information and ideas with regard to research and investigation projects or surgical procedures you may be contemplating. Venus and Mars are conjunct in Libra, so a love affair, or a cultural project connected with a foreigner, or someone you met whilst travelling, perhaps of a different race or religion. Faraway places and ethic attractions are in the wind. Mercury moves forward on September 12th, with the shadow phase around till Sep 27.
Mercury's fourth and final retro phase for the year begins on December 10, 2010, in Capricorn again. A lot of issues from the past have emerged during the last twelve months, concerning your work and health, and how you have dealt with secret enmity and covert hostility—but now is the time to get all this straightened out, so you can take advantage of Jupiter's very positive move into fiery Aries in January 2011, when you'll develop your knowledge and skills with computers, or any type of machinery and mechanical equipment. Communications and travel increase, widening your circle of contacts and encouraging the exchange of ideas and information. However, that's then, but now you may be forced to hide your personal influence as well as the material assets that may endow you with personal power. Your search for control of one sort or another may itself be hidden, or just not be very obvious to others. You may develop interest in dream analysis, occult subjects, and the development and use of intuitive and paranormal power such as clairvoyance and ESP. The opportunity for personal growth and spiritual epiphany is there, but beware of sudden splurges and showing off. Your New Moon on Feb 14th sees Mercury in your sign opposing Mars in Leo, with Neptune also in your sign conjunct Chiron, the wounded healer. This marks a new beginning at a very personal level, affecting relationships, demeanour and presentation or image, but a misty or dewy-eyed idea of what will heal the deep wounds in your life may mislead you. Information too may lead to faulty actions, where erroneous ideas or contacts from the past create some hostility. Either that, or you misinterpret what it means. Don't do exactly the opposite of what you have been told; for even if you've correctly followed instructions, things may still go awry.
Acting rashly or failing to ascertain important details will have undesirable consequences. Don't purchase or sell a car, electrical or mechanical equipment; moreover, it would not be wise to take a trip, for travel is fraught with physical danger, equipment breakdown and delays or cancellations. You may strike out in an unexpected direction, or form a liaison with someone who is in some way uncharacteristic as a companion or partner. The temptation will be to withdraw from your current partner or connection, in order to pursue your own path. Changes, interruptions or breaks affect personal relations. Your Full Moon comes on July 26th, in a fortunate aspect to the Great Chronocrators, Saturn and Jupiter. These two are in opposition, marking a big time of change in the world, and given that Uranus and Pluto are in on the picture, this Moon will be a doozy! Partnership matters or personal relations come up against a wall of obstruction, but should quickly reach a turning point. Saturn is moving forward nicely, but Jupiter and Uranus are square the eclipse, back in your house of personal finances and values. You may be tempted to exaggerate your social status, professional position, intellectual accomplishments, or monetary assets. Restlessness and discontent, or others you wish to impress, may stimulate this exaggeration. Be warned, past actions (good or bad!) may catch up with you. Mercury and Jupiter are under pressure too, just as they were at the Solar Eclipse in June, so this should bring matters that have been bubbling beneath the surface to a very visible head. You are unlikely to be able to control the circumstances you encounter during this period. Your normal schedule or the plans you have made may be disrupted by the weather, war, or other forces in your outer environment. Though you may not be able to control the disruptions themselves, they may stimulate you to adopt an unusual or different approach to things on a personal level. Communications and travel in particular are likely to be subject to disruption, as Mercury is retrograde, but it's a good time to work in with charitable organisations, helping the needy and the underprivileged. Explore and develop your inner strengths, and gain a deeper understanding of your childhood conditioning, subconscious mind, fears, and dreams.
