Does Worshipping Bring any Results?
Worship means to offer praise and prayers to God or a god or goddess. Before we analyse the mechanism involved and the results expected we need to enquire about the necessity of worshipping. Why you wish to worship? If you are honest you will agree that nearly always it is fulfilment of some personal need or desire which drives us to worship.
You need a large sum of money to fulfil any of your material requirements so you go to a temple and worship and expect that someday a brick of gold will fall upon your worshipping hands. Well if it worked you won’t find a poor person anywhere on this earth.
Differentiate Between Need and Lust …
This world is created for Souls to descend to physical bodies and learn through experiences. So everything is action oriented. There are finer worlds elsewhere and everything there is accomplished by thoughts. But upon this Earth you need to initiate action. In Bhagvad Gita Lord Krishna has emphasised on action and has condemned inaction.
Fulfilment of basic needs, such as enough food to survive, reasonably good health to keep body and soul together and betterment of others are things for which we all can expect divine help. But for the fulfilment of our lustful, greedy and wild desires any amount of worship or prayer may bring no results.
What is Right and what is wrong for us?
While in the physical body, with very limited awareness we human beings are not in a position to judge right and wrong in the eternal sense. Only God or the omniscient divine forces know better; what is right or wrong for an individual. This is the important point which Lord Krishna wanted us to know when He said In the Shaloka 47 of the Chapter 2, “……
but you are not entitled to the fruits of action.”.
karmanyevadhikaraste
ma phalesukadacana
ma karma-phala-heturbhur
ma tesango 'stvakarmani’
This Shaloka is translated as follows:
’You have a right to perform your prescribed duty,
but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.’
So the best thing is to do our righteous duty by taking appropriate actions as and when required by our individual circumstances and conditions and leave the results to God. Always listen to the inner voice of our consciousness which can be a pointer to keep us on the right track.
Worship and Prayers should be a part of our duty. Pray for whatever you think is right for you and others but leave the final results on God because He is in a better position to judge.
Have a Positive attitude towards Worship and Prayers …
So always keep a positive attitude because worship and prayer are potent channels through which you connect to your higher or real self.
The problem occurs only when we, motivated by our purely selfish desires, try to pull at God’s legs.
The Purpose of Life …
The purpose of life is learning, learning and nothing but learning! It is a continuous process of learning through our experiences and evolving to greater and greater awareness.
We must keep a positive attitude towards any hardship, sorrow or problem which comes in our way; it could be a part of our learning process. When Gautama the prince saw suffering and sorrow in the world outside his confined luxurious existence he became too negative. This negative-ness drove Gautama to seclusion to seek answers to his puzzled mind. As he reached the stage of Buddhahood he came up with a divine solution, ‘to follow the middle way’. So let us all learn from Lord Buddha’s revelation. Avoid going to extremes, follow a righteous life and take help of the
potent channels of Worship and Prayer in order to stay connected to the higher forces which govern us.
Separate Superstition from True Worship …
Many of us are confused about many things. Try to separate the two things viz. Superstition and True Worship. We are governed by very highly evolved and intelligent Divine Forces. It is superstitious to believe that you may suffer if you do not give a penny in the name of God, or do not visit a place of worship, or not feed a priest or not have a dip in holy waters on an auspicious occasion etc.
Everything on the physical plane of existence has a controlling force on the astral or subtle plane of existence. So our worship and prayer is supposed to reach there. Have a positive and rational view about these invisible forces of Nature. These forces operate under certain principles which we normally are not aware of. Only meditation can help you to have a better understanding of these forces.
So just for one example, to believe in the existence of the ‘Sun Deity’ is a reality and not a superstitious belief. But to believe that the Deity is there to fulfil your every ‘whim and wish’ is delusion. This applies to all Deities, gods and goddesses.
Worshipping and Praying for Others …
If only we could come out of our limited-shells and pray and worship for the betterment of other people, we can witness fast results.
Our wise sages assure us that peace will dawn upon the suffering world if just a few genuine people regularly get together selflessly, and collectively pray sincerely for world peace and betterment of others.
It works like a Boomerang …
There is a law of Nature; everything you give or send out comes back to you with interest added. If you think and do evil for others only evil will come to you. Think and do good things for others and only good will return to you. So have faith in this universal law and start worshipping and praying for other’s betterment and uplift and you will be surprised to experience the positive results at a unbelievably fast pace!
Thanksgiving …
Through worship and Prayer also thank God, gods and goddesses for all the bounties you ever enjoy. Don’t just wait for something big to happen; winning a lottery or promotion in job or a bigger and luxurious car at your gate etc. thank the Divine forces even when you realise that your stomach is being filled and you have a roof to protect you from heat, rain and cold.
