The Story of Shashti or Chath
The King Priyavrat, son of the first Manu (Adam) Swayambhuv did not have any child. Once, he shared his grief with saint Kashyap and asked for the solution to get a son. The saint has suggested to do the Putreshti Yagya (a fire ceremony). After some time, as the result of Yagya, the Queen of King has delivered a baby boy, but that baby was dead. The mourning news was spread throughout the city. King Priyavrat was under a big shock and he was carrying his son's dead body and crying like a crazy man. All other people was standing nearby with helplessness and no one is having courage to take away babies body from the King for the funeral.
At the same time an amazing thing happened. Everyone saw a light aircraft from the sky coming towards the Earth and a divine female figure is sitting in the aircraft. After appropriate prayers by King that lady said to him, “My name is Shashthi Devi and I'm the psyche daughter of Lord Brihma. I'm the protector of all the sons of this world and giving sons to the parents without son. She said, “Putradaaham aputraay” and touched to the dead baby. Just by the touch of Shasthi Devi, King's son get alive. The King was very pleased and he praised the Shashsthi Devi. The Shasthi Devi was also become happy and said to the King, “Start my worshiping on the earth by everyone.” and then she disappeared from there. Thereafter, King happily accepted it and every month on the sixth day of shukla paksha's celebrated as Shashthi Tithi (date) in a form of huge festival in his state.
Since then Shashthi Pujan / Chath Pujan has been started at the time of birth, Namkaran, Annaparashan rituals of the babies. In this festival, offering of sweet rice is very important.
